Fresh Ginger Tea

Yesterday was awkward. I went to the dentist for a cleaning and my hygienist was a nice young lady about my age.

Every other hygienist I've had has been my mom's age. So I thought, cool, someone chat with about feather hair extensions and lychee martinis. Right?

Wrong, apparently. Having someone my own age stick their hands in my mouth and scrape junk off my teeth was just awkward. Turns out I kind of want someone a little like my mom to give the flossing lecture.

But I did learn a fun fact, you're not supposed to rinse with water after you use mouthwash. Huh.

This ginger tea is a little like mouth wash, it will certainly give your mouth that "clean" feeling. Enjoy it hot or iced, strong or gentle.

Fresh Ginger Tea
makes 12 cups

1 big piece of fresh ginger, about the length of your shoes
12 cups of water
lemon slices, if desired

Break ginger into small pieces, no need to peel. Toss the pieces into a food processor and pulse until it reaches the size of grains of rice. Dump ginger into a coffee filter, there should be about 1 cup of ginger.

Add 12 cups of water to your coffee maker and brew the ginger as you would coffee.

This is a fairly strong brew, so adjust amount of ginger as desired. Enjoy!

  1. LOL. Ya, It's always awkward talking during a dental appointment. I hate it when my dentist asks me a question that requires more than "ugh" or "a-ha" when he is cleaning my teeth. So whatever question he ask I just shrug my shoulders, even if I know the answer. LOL

I can't wait to try this drink. It looks so refreshing and healthy. I can't wait.

  2. I'm going to get all awkward on you here cuz your food creations make me just about goofy. I'm ready to run out to the store and get a giant thing of ginger right now. I love going to the dentist and having someone have their hands all up in my mouth while they try and have a conversation with me and all I can do is make throat gutteral noises. The conversation just flies doesn't it? lol. How would we ever ensure to get someone older than us to do our cleanings? Phone up the dentist to make the appointment and ask "So - the person who does my cleaning needs to be at least 15-20 years older than me OK?" That on it's own might get depressing as I get older - great, I've just given myself a complex about the age of ppl cleaning my teeth. Thanks for helping me out with that one Gwen. ;)

  3. These are a few of my favorite things: ginger and tea. I have some stomach issues, so ginger tea helps a lot! I've never tried making my own... can't wait to do it!

  4. So I had to let you know my 6 yr old got sent home from school yesterday for throwing up. It didn't seem to be from a stomach bug but rather a really high fever. I immediately thought of this because of the benefits of ginger to the immune system. I made this but with my own twist. I added a stalk of lemon grass, mint, and a whole red chili pepper. I brewed it rather strong with the intent of cutting it with sparkling mineral water when I served it at a ratio of about 1-1. Everyone loves it. Thanks Gwen. I never would've thought of this without your recipe as inspiration.

  5. Ginger tea is a good natural ingredient for rinsing your mouth. It's easy to obtain, and the recipe is easy to do as well. There are other options which can be used as natural mouthwash, such as clover and chamomile, which can be turned into tea. There's nothing wrong with having a little chit chat with your dentist. In fact, you’re getting to know each other through that.

    1. Great tips! I will have to try the ginger mouthwash, that sounds super refreshing. By the way, my hygienist was wonderful and I enjoyed chatting with her:)
