Detox: Life

It's time for some real words.

I've been feeling exceptionally sorry for myself this past little while. Time is difficult to perceive in such a state, as many of you know. It slips and slips until, before you even know it, time is not a thing at all. And the part of this that has slipped away even more is the reason for it.

There are reasons. But now it's time to welcome in the other side of life: the light, the smiles, the doing of things. Because there is more to it than dwelling in the darkness.

This all seems too much to share. And you should know about Thursday. Thursday brought an unexpected death in my family. Death has a way of waking you from a deep, dark, inner sleep by grabbing you by the shoulders and shaking the nonsense right out of you. This nonsense pours from my nose, from my ears, from the palms of my hands.

I could look back on this year and sigh. Or I could look back on this year and grow up.

To address this need to let the sunshine back in, rid ourselves of the dreaded Christmas belly, and in general cleanse this past year for our lives, I propose a detox. Not of the chile powder and lemon juice sort, but of the mind, body, and soul variety.

The month of January will be dedicated to detoxing one aspect of life everyday, be it sugar, a grudge, or clutter.

Would you care to join me in starting this year off with the cleanest start we can imagine? Send me an email to gwenedwards82 [at] or leave a note in the comments if you'd like to participate in Detox: Life as a guest poster or have some ideas you'd like to share.

Go ahead and nurse your hangover today, but think about this: what do you need to detox from your life right now?

  1. Thank for sharing this. I, too, have dealt with the darker side of life and it's extremely difficult to shake. I would love to help out if you need guest posts. As for the death in the family, I'm sorry. I don't know what to say and never have with this situation, but I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Get well, Gwen.

  2. I love that you shared this. Something has definitely been dragging me down and I am making my first goal to get back to a happy place and you couldn't have described what I needed any better.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I know that with time all wounds heal but I wish you the best on your detox: life. Get well soon :)

    a cup of subtle tea

  3. I'm so sorry you are facing some struggles topped by the sudden loss of a family member. Your words are so genuine and I am so thankful you chose to share. It's sounds like your perspective of change and growth is healthy. This is something I need to be part of, so I would love to join January detox. I'm going to have to put some thought into my detox focus...

    love you always!

  4. I think the detox idea is a wonderful one and I've been feeling the same...I need it many areas, diet, material item consumption, negativity & despair...

I'm so so sorry for your loss. You may be a big grown up girl but I'm giving you a big virtual hug anyway.

Happy new year...I'm very glad you reached out to me. I'll need some cooking guidance with my once a week 2012 challenge.

  5. Hey there! I came over from Maui Shop Girl, and am so glad I did! I'm sorry for your loss. I just had an uncle pass away right before Christmas, and the way you describe "waking up" is spot on. Life is just too short to carry around baggage (whether physical or emotional) that doesn't enhance our lives.

This week I'm really gonna try to organize myself - clear out the things that aren't working for me and re-arrange the things that I choose to keep. I really want to pare down, simplify and lighten my load.

  6. I'm sorry for this loss. i wish I could say or do something to take all this pain away. Instead I can offer you the only thing I know how and that is my ear. Anytime, you need someone to judgement, no talking back...just let me know. I'll be hear to listen. Stay strong and the darkness will go away.
